The difference between solid silicone and liquid silicone material

  • 2023-05-12

Silicones are a group of synthetic elastomers that are widely used in various industries such as automotive, construction, healthcare, and electronics. They come in different forms such as solids, liquids, and gels, but two of the most common forms are solid silicone and liquid silicone. While both are made of silicone materials, they have distinct differences in their characteristics, properties, and applications.

Solid Silicone

Solid silicone,or silicone rubber,is a type of silicone elastomer that is cured or vulcanized to form a solid, flexible, and durable material. It is made of a mixture of silicone polymer, filler materials, and crosslinking agents, which are processed through compression molding, transfer molding,or injection molding to achieve the desired shape and dimensions.Solid silicone typically has a durometer range of 20 to 80 Shore A,which means it can be soft or firm depending on its formulation.

One of the main advantages of solid silicone is its high temperature resistance. It can withstand temperatures from -50°C to +230°C without losing its mechanical properties, which makes it suitable for applications that involve exposure to extreme heat or cold. Solid silicone is also resistant to chemicals,UV radiation, and aging, which means it can maintain its integrity and functionality over time.It is often used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and medical devices, where reliability and durability are critical.

However, solid silicone also has some limitations. It is not as flexible or elastic as other elastomers, which can make it unsuitable for applications that require high deformation or compression. It is also relatively expensive compared to other materials, which can increase the cost of production.

Liquid Silicone

Liquid silicone,or LSR,is a type of silicone elastomer that is poured or injected into a mold to form a flexible and high-precision part.It is made of a two-part liquid silicone material that consists of a base compound and a curing agent, which react together to form a crosslinked network of silicone polymer.Liquid silicone is often referred to as "LSR" or "liquid injection molding (LIM)" because of the injection molding process used to create parts.

One of the main advantages of liquid silicone is its high precision and accuracy. It can be molded into complex shapes and features with tight tolerances, which makes it suitable for applications that require exact dimensions and specifications.Liquid silicone is also highly flexible and elastic, which allows it to withstand high deformation or compression without losing its shape or properties. It is often used in industries such as medical devices, baby products, and electronic components, where softness and elasticity are essential.

However, liquid silicone also has some limitations. It is not as temperature-resistant as solid silicone, and it can only withstand temperatures from -50°C to +200°C without experiencing deformation or degradation. It is also more difficult to process and cure than solid silicone, which can increase the production time and cost.

Both solid silicone and liquid silicone have their unique properties and applications.Solid silicone is known for its high temperature resistance and durability, while liquid silicone is known for its high precision and flexibility. When choosing between these two forms of silicone,it is essential to consider the specific requirements and constraints of the application to determine which one is the best fit.
